Trendline: Politics
It's been a campaign for the record books.  More than 16 months and hundreds of millions of dollars later, and we now know that either Barack Obama or John McCain will become out nation's 44th President.

But, there's a long way to go before either can call 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue "home."

And, as our Political Trendline shows, the two candidates are locked in a fierce battle.

According to the latest WNBC/Marist Poll, Obama has the early lead.  He's ahead of McCain by 6 percentage points nationwide.

But, those numbers could easily change. 14% of voters say they’re undecided and 7% who support a candidate say they might change their minds.
But remember, it's the Electoral College that determines the winner on a state-by-state basis.

When George W. Bush won in 2000 this was how the nation divided - the red states going Republican and the blue Democratic.

When Bush was re-elected four years later, only three states flipped their support. Iowa and New Mexico went Republican. New Hampshire voted Democratic.
This was the most consistant Electoral College the U.S. has ever seen in back-to back elections.  And, it'll be interesting to see if this time McCain and Obama put different battleground states into play.
